The debate over salt versus chlorine pools has waged for years and while there isn’t a clear-cut choice for a winner, it goes without saying, that saltwater pools have many advantages including less maintenance and lower overall costs. While the expense of switching your pool from regular chlorine products may require an initial investment, the savings generated over the next few years will more than pay for itself.
As we have heard, saltwater pools do not contain many of the harsh chemicals present in regularly chlorinated pools, however, this is not to say that salt pools do not contain chlorine because chlorine is being produced by the cell. With that said, the levels of chlorine are significantly lower and will not hurt or sting your eyes. Your tears already have salt in them, which is why the salt in the water will not bother you. And, the chemical levels are much safer for your family and your pets that may enjoy swimming with you.
Salt is eco-friendly and is a much more natural approach. It tends to be less harsh on your skin and hair. In fact, you’ll be able to wear your favorite bathing suit a few more seasons because it won’t be subject to the traditional chemical damage. At the cell wall where the chlorine is being produced, where the chlorine levels reach break point chlorination, this is where the chloramines are eliminated (bad chlorine). A good example of when the chloramines are not eliminated is when you enter an indoor pool area and you encounter the heavy chlorine smell, which causes eye irritation.
One of the biggest worries regarding salt pools is if the water is salty like the ocean. The answer is absolutely not. The salt concentration for saltwater pools is around 3,000 ppm. Most people can taste salt around 3,500 ppm to 4,000 ppm. As a comparison, ocean water contains about 35,000 ppm of salt.
