Preventative maintenance is key to long-lasting equipment. Some simple checks of your equipment can be the difference of a long life or short life on these intricate pieces of machinery. Since we are in the giving spirit, give yourself and your pool and spa the gift they deserve, preventative maintenance checks all year long. Be sure to address small correctable problems before they become large, expensive ones.
An easy routine check starts with your circulation system by following the path of the water. Clean out the pool’s skimmer basket and empty all of its contents.
Next, open the pump strainer basket and clean it. Check the pressure of the filter. Be sure to clean the basket before checking the pressure as debris in the basket could actually lower the pressure of the filter. If the pressure is high (which is different for each pool – 30 psi and above is usually considered high pressure), the filter may need cleaning as well. A properly working pressure gauge is a must!
Don’t forget to check the heater for leaves or debris. Turn the heater on and off a few times to make sure it is operating properly. While the heater is running, turn the pump off. The heater should shut off by itself when the pressure from the pump drops. This is an important safety check. Most heaters have a delay of up to five minutes, so they may not fire up as soon as the pump is turned on.
Last, check the time clock is set properly. Checking the clocks is always recommended as power outages can affect the setting.
After you complete your equipment check, look for leaks or other early signs of equipment failure. Clean up the equipment area by removing leaves from around the motor vents and heater to prevent fires, and clear drains of debris that could prevent water from draining away from the equipment during rain.
