Have you met anyone that wishes for costly pool repair bills? Of course not. Do you do your part to extend the life of your equipment? It’s pretty easy to do, but surprisingly, most pool owners are guilty when it comes to the simple tasks involved to avoiding expensive pool repair bills. That’s right, it is simply routine equipment maintenance! With a few simple steps, you can extend the life of your equipment and avoid replacing it before its average life span.
The first thing you can do is check the pool’s chemistry a minimum of one time per week, and preferably two times per week in the heavy summer months. This will ensure the chemicals are balanced and the pool is ready for use. The skimmer basket should be cleaned during this process as well along with checking the water level. The normal level should be to about the middle of the skimmer.
Clean your filters. It’s best to clean them every weekly, but no less than monthly. Remind yourself to do it each time you change the air filters in your home. Soak dirty filters in a 10% solution of muriatic acid or a solution of TSP (trisodium phosphate). Use a rubber trashcan. Wear gloves and eye protection and only add acid to water, not the other way around. Rinse until clean and let dry.
Pool maintenance is fairly easy, but requires an on-going commitment. If routine maintenance is not for you or the commitment is challenging, then it may be best to hire a professional pool service company to ensure the maintenance is being performed to ensure the longer life of your equipment. While it may cost a little more each month to have a service, the savings in the long run could be substantial.
