As the temperature starts to cool down a little this fall, you may want to start thinking about purchasing a heat pump – or replacing your old one – so that you can enjoy warm, tropical water all year round. One of the decisions that you will have to make when considering a new pool heater is whether you want a solar or electric system.
According to Energy.gov, “Solar pool heaters are more popular and cost-effective in sunny states like Florida, Arizona, and California.” Solar pool heaters use your existing pool pump to move the water through a filter and then through a solar collector (which is mounted on any location that’s exposed to the sun). The warmed collector heats the water, which is then returned to the pool. These types of heaters are initially more expensive, but will pay for themselves in 1.5 – 7 years, depending on local fuel costs. Another plus is that they last almost twice as long as electric heat pump pool heaters.
Electric heat pumps work just like central air conditioning heat pumps, only in reverse. Instead of removing heat from the inside of your home and expelling it to the outside air, a pool heat pump takes heat out of the outside air and transfers it into your pool water. If you want to heat your pool very quickly – and you don’t use your pool regularly – this might be the best system for you.
At Horizon Pool and Patio, we have a wide variety of pool heating systems for you to choose from. If you are considering upgrading your backyard experience with a solar or electric heater, one of our Horizon Pool and Patio specialists can help guide you through the process and determine the best solution for your lifestyle and budget.
