Florida is known for its warm and pleasant weather, which is why it is one of the top tourist destinations in North America and has the nickname “The Sunshine State.” But during the scorching summer months, we rely on afternoon and evening thunderstorm activity for relief from the heat. This can be great for our lawns, but not so great for our pools.
In July, South Florida can get as much as 1-2 inches of rain in only an hour or two, which can undo all of the hard work you put into balancing your pool water. Lots of things can go wrong when too much rain water is introduced to your pool – whether it’s coming directly into the pool, or it’s run off from landscaping and decks.
Water that comes off your landscape will be an issue because of the inorganics (aka fertilizer). It can and will cause water balance problems and promote algae growth. When rain water and run off enter the pool, it can also change your water’s pH, calcium hardness, total dissolved solids (TDS) and other chemical levels because it is diluting the chemicals in your pool water. It is important to remember that rain water is acidic, and that acid will lower pH. If low pH goes untreated, it can cause etching on plaster and metal parts.
The extent of the chemistry issues you’ll experience will of course depend on how much rain you get.
A great way to avoid a troublesome imbalance of chemicals in your pool during the rainy summer months is to test the water frequently. It is also a good idea to drain excess water, bringing your water to an appropriate level for proper skimming.
At Horizon Pool and Patio, our expert technicians are here to assist you in all of your chemical balancing needs and can help keep your pool looking its best at all times – especially in the summer. We offer free expert water analysis and recommendations, and encourage customers to bring in a water sample for us to test.
