Are you thinking about adding a new heating system to your pool? Here are some common questions that we will try to answer for you:
Q: How warm should my pool be?
A: That depends on your personal taste. But the temperature recommended for recreational swimming by the American Red Cross is 78 degrees F. If you have young children or are elderly, you may need to make it closer to 80 degrees F for comfort.
Q: Is it really worth it to add heat to my pool—especially living in Florida?
A: Even though our winters aren’t cold, pool water can get uncomfortable when it drops just a few degrees. If you want to make use of your pool, whether as a source of entertainment for the kids, a place to exercise or any other use, the only way to get year-round enjoyment out of your pool is to have it heated.
Q: What are the costs involved in heating my pool?
A: First, there is the one time cost of installing the heating system. Then, there is the monthly cost of fuel. This expense varies depending on the type of heating system you buy, how much you use it, and what the outdoor temperature is. Finally, there is the cost for annual or semi-annual maintenance and service.
Q: What type of heating system should I buy?
A: There are basically three types of heating systems to choose from.
The first option is a gas-powered swimming pool heater. These require a propane tank or a natural gas hookup. The number one reason people choose gas over electric or solar is the speed at which gas heaters will achieve the desired temperature, regardless of the outside air temperature. The second option is the heat pump which is three times less expensive to operate than a propane gas heater. Finally, the third option is the solar heater, which uses the sun’s heat to warm your swimming pool. You can expect solar to increase the temperature in your pool by 10-14º above a non-heated pool using your existing pool pump.
