No matter what else you associate with the summer of 2016, it’s likely that one of the most memorable events will be the Olympic Games. Always exciting and inspirational, many of the Olympic Games encourage athletes to push hard and go fast. But in other cases, such as long distance running, the old proverb, “slow and steady wins the race,” is the guiding principles.
So which philosophy is the best to follow when it comes to your pool pump?
While many homeowners would assume a pump that pushes hard all the time is the better choice for their pool, this is just not true. The goal of a quality pool pump is to do its job as well as possible using as little energy as possible. Variable speed pumps do this best because of their adaptability.
Some pool pump functions require a high flow rate, such as pulling debris from the surface of the pool to the skimmer and from the bottom of the pool back up to the top so that the water can be skimmed and/or filtered before being returned to the pool. Others, such as gently circulating pool water, require much less power. The problem with a one speed pump is that it has to work at the full power needed to do its hardest jobs all the time. And so, when only minimal power is needed, it is still running hard. This type of pump can cost $2 or more per day to run for the recommended eight hours a day. Since the “slow and steady” variable speed pump can be set to run on low most of the time, only going faster and using more energy when necessary, it can cost as little as 40 to 50 cents a day to run. And so, while purchasing a new, variable speed pump will cost you more initially, by the second year, you should have recouped the difference in energy savings.
