What has happened to your pool? Your beautiful, relaxing outdoor refuge is starting to show its age. Perhaps it is stained or starting to feel rough on your feet. Or maybe you’re just looking for a way to update the look. Either way, by resurfacing your pool, you can change the entire look and feel of your pool. Today, the options are incredible—from river pebbles to glass beads and more. Whichever you choose will make a significant impact in the aesthetic of your pool.
While in the past, traditional, white plaster was the norm, today, aggregate finishes have gained popularity. A modern take on a plaster pool finish, an aggregate surface is more resistant to pool chemicals and less likely to stain. These finishes are made of white or colored plaster mixed with a variety of materials. These can include quartz, granite, river rocks or glass beads. The look of an aggregate finish is luxurious and can give your pool a more unique look.
Aggregate finishes come in two different ways:
Polished Aggregates:
For a timeless, classic look, polished aggregates are perfect. They contain finely crushed stones, such as granite, marble or quartz. This finish must be hand applied to your pool with a trowel. Afterwards, it is polished to make the surface smooth and polish the stones. The stones in the concrete provide a bit of bling to your pool. As a bonus, polished aggregate surfaces can last much longer than a plain, plaster surface, sometimes up to 20 years, making them as smart as they are beautiful.
Exposed Aggregates:
An exposed aggregate pool surface is installed differently than a polished one. When these finishes are applied to your pool, while the material is still wet, the finish is power washed with a mix of water and muriatic acid to remove the top layer of concrete. By doing so, the pebbles or glass beads that have been added to the concrete are exposed. Aside from their beauty, the stones lend an additional benefit. Their surface adds a bit of traction to the bottom of the pool.
There are two types of popular exposed aggregates.
- Pebble Finishes – The tiny pebbles in this product give a more natural, rustic look.
- Glass Bead Finishes – Often used on more modern looking pools, glass beads in the concrete give the pool a 3D effect and add a dose of sparkle to the surface.
