Top 3 Upgrades for a Safer Swimming Pool
No matter your swimming skills or how often you use your swimming pool, drowning or other dangerous pool-related accidents can occur in an instant. If you’re a South Florida pool owner, this means taking extra precaution when it comes to the safety of your swimming pool.
So, where you do begin? Consider these safety products for pool owners to help safeguard your swimming pool all year long.
Install a Pool Safety Fence
Poolside supervision isn’t always enough to keep your loved ones safe. According to FS 515.23 and FS 515.29, the Legislature found that drowning is the leading cause of death of young children and a significant cause of death for medically frail elderly persons in the State of Florida. A pool fence, officially referred to as a swimming pool barrier, must be at least 4 feet high on the outside and may not have any gaps, openings, indentations, protrusions, or structural components that could allow a young child to crawl under, squeeze through or climb over to be considered safe, and must be placed around the perimeter to be effective.
In addition to the swimming pool barrier, any gate that provides access to swimming pools must open outward away from the pool and be self-closing and equipped with a self-latching locking devise. The release mechanism of which must be located on the pool side of the gate and so placed that it cannot be reached by a young child over the top or through any opening or gap.
Pool Alarm System
Installing a pool alarm is another safety measure to keep your loved ones out of harm’s way. Simply attach the alarm to your gate and the alarm will sound when your children try to enter your swimming pool. Pressure alarms are another smart safety feature that is easy to install and will alert you if someone falls into your swimming pool. An added enhancement to a pool alarm would be a home alarm system where the exterior doors beep when opened.
