Pool Chemicals 101

Keeping your pool chemical levels right can be a very confusing job! Even with the tester kits and the internet, balancing pool chemicals can make you feel like you need a degree in chemistry. Read below to see a more simplified explanation of pool chemicals for the DIYers out there.

Pool-techWhy Do Pool Chemicals Matter?

There are two main reasons we need to worry about pool chemicals: safety and appearance. No one really enjoys spending the time and money on pool chemicals, especially when they can sting your eyes. However, the safety of your pool is dependent on the chemicals we put in the pool and how they are balanced. Otherwise, your pool can grow algae and harmful bacteria. Additionally, these chemicals keep your pool crystal blue. Not often in nature do we see bright blue waters, and these chemicals do that job.

The Basics of Pool Chemicals

Keeping the pool clean is the job of chlorine (some use bromine). It can come in liquid or tablet form, or the recommended chlorine generator (or salt system). Many of the chemicals in your pool are to help keep other chemicals working properly. Here are some terms to help you get familiar with the pool chemical job at hand:

Stabilizers are chemicals that work with chlorine to help it stay more durable to the sun, which rapidly destroys the chlorine. The stabilizer will “boost” the way chlorine works in your pool.

pH Level refers to your acidity or alkalinity pool levels. Without going into a deep description, the pH level being too high or too low can cause issued not only in your water, but also with the pool equipment. It also causes the chlorine in the pool to not work right. The ideal level is between 7.2 – 7.6.

Shock treatment may work to reset your pool with a high chlorine dose. This helps oxidize particles, kill bacteria and algae and restore water clarity.
